A cave is an opening into the earth itself — dark, enclosed, leading down and in. To enter a cave is to begin a journey into your depths, with all the fear and promise that entails.

Caves are strongly associated with the womb and with rebirth. Their enclosed darkness echoes the place we came from, and across mythologies the cave is where heroes go to die symbolically and be reborn, where initiations happen in the dark before emerging transformed. A cave dream during a major transition can carry this deep meaning — a retreat into darkness that's not an ending but a gestation, a necessary withdrawal before new life emerges.

The cave's darkness also holds fear. To venture into a cave is to face the unknown, the things that lurk in the dark, the parts of yourself you can't see and may not want to. Caves in dreams can guard monsters and dragons — the fears and shadow-aspects we must confront in our own depths. The reluctance to go deeper into a cave often mirrors a reluctance to face something hidden within.

But caves famously hold treasure as well as monsters. The same dark depths that frighten also conceal the buried gold, the hidden gems, the precious thing that can only be found by those brave enough to go in and dig. A cave dream may be pointing to valuable insight, potential, or self-knowledge that lies hidden in your depths, retrievable only by the inward journey the cave represents. What you fear to enter is often exactly where your treasure is kept.
